<Cauldyth> our sysadmin needs a reality check me thinks
<Cauldyth> this means nothing to anyone but him, and he sent it to the entire company:
<Cauldyth> "While in the NYC office on Friday, monica experienced a SCSI bus fault on the storage array's backplane. The error was compounded by a bad sector and thus left the array unable to recover from the bus fault. The result of the issue was an internal checksum loop on the array and the cluster's NFS system overloaded the manager node while attempting to keep up with the compute nodes that were attempting to reach this now unavailable array. The manager, in turn, became unavailable both remotely and at the console."

If Blizzard can't keep their forums up, I'll just post here...

Listen up: Speak English Please!
GG means "good game", and is usually used in an ironic manner. For example, after pwning someone with righteous fury, you may mockingly call "gg" to him.
See now to me, that's just sad. Back in the day, 'gg' was a sign of respect. At the end of the game, whether you won or lost, you saluted your opponent by telling them you valued the competition and had a good time. I first started seeing the use of 'gg' degraded in Warcraft 3 -- though it may have happened elsewhere before that, it's the first I saw it. People started saying 'gg' at the beginning of a game to mock the opponent. Now it's done a complete 180 and is a term of DISrespect.

I find that trend a little depressing. I see a culture of disrespect for other players growing ever larger in online games. I know that it's "just a game", but there's a real person on the other side of the screen. Whatever happened to the golden rule?

(Someone stop me before I get completely maudlin...)

Music and the Brain

Blood and Zatorre added a further clue to how music evokes pleasure. When they scanned the brains of musicians who had chills of euphoria when listening to music, they found that music activated some of the same reward systems that are stimulated by food, sex and addictive drugs.

OH MY GOD!

Listening to music is just like taking drugs...

The government needs to get all over this right away!

Settling In
I'm finally moving in to my new house this weekend after a month and a half in temporary housing. Maybe that means I'll put some random thoughts in here more often?

Oh, and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Moving to Seattle
I'll be incommunicado for a couple weeks as my stuff gets relocated from Beverly Hills to Seattle.

Sucks, but I can't really complain about a free move--my new employer is covering it!

A Heartwarming Tale of Neighborly Love
Good to see that disasters still bring out the best in people:

[Melbourne FL Deputy Police Chief John] Short summoned three police officers to his home about 11 p.m. and had the officers threaten Buksas-Gutierrez with arrest if she did not turn off her newly acquired generator. She and her 4-year-old son lacked power for 10 days, and she was operating an air conditioner.

The cop was upset because the generator was too noisy. Maybe next time a hurricane comes around he should stick his head out the window for a while to attenuate his hearing.

Or, he could just buy some of these.
